The Famous Decatur County Courthouse Tower Tree
 

 

Decatur County is located in southeast Indiana at the intersections of Interstate 74 and State Road 3.  The County Seat of Decatur County is Greensburg.  The population of Decatur County is approximately 25,000, with 10,000 of those people living in Greensburg.

As you can see in the above picture, the courthouse of Decatur County has a tree growing out of the top of the courthouse tower.  This tree has been mentioned in publications throughout the world, including an episode on the television show, "Ripley's Believe It or Not", and causes thousands of visitors to come to Greensburg each year.

South Girls Win Sectional
May 29, 2009

The South Decatur High School Lady Cougars won Sectional 60 at Jac-Cen-Del against Rising Sun High School to win their first sectional championship in 11 years.  The final score was 12-8.

While the game ball rests on the base of the sectional trophy, the Lady Cougars rest on the field of their domain after clinching the program's first sectional title since 1999. Greensburg Wins Indiana Academic Super Bowl

Greensburg Community High School's English Team won the Indiana Academic Super Bowl competition that was held Saturday at Purdue University.

The Indiana Academic Super Bowl is held by the Indiana Association of School Principals and it started with 300 teams from throughout the state but only 24 teams made it to the finals at Purdue University. The competition consists of six subject areas: science, fine arts, social studies, math, English and an interdisciplinary round with questions from all other areas. Each team must answer 25 multiple choice questions.

The Super Bowl's theme was "An American Generation 1964-1980." The questions covered a wide variety of topics from this time period, such as pop art, political figures, the various Rights movements, the U.S. space program, and the Vietnam War.

Single Mothers Network

● A support group for single mothers in the Decatur County area

● Weekly meetings at Greensburg United Methodist Church, held on Tuesdays, 6:30- 7:30 pm. Childcare will be provided!

● Goal of forming a network of women who share similar challenges and concerns, to establish a healthy process of listening, encouraging and supporting one another, to discuss stressful issues, and obtain creative solutions to some of the problems they may be experiencing.

● Guest speakers and topics will include: parent effectiveness training, improving communication with the noncustodial parent, preparation guidelines for legal proceedings, health and nutrition, and much more.

● Peer support network pledged to maintain confidentiality, to expand insights into self and others, subsequently strengthening participant's capacities to effectively parent.

● Group facilitator: Connie Sprague Frink, RN, MSW
