January 14, 2009 - Not one member of the North Decatur girls basketball team had beaten Greensburg at the varsity level – until Thursday night.
Coming off a disappointing loss to Indian Creek before beating Morristown Tuesday, the Chargers were facing one of its biggest challenges of the season in Class 3A Greensburg. The Pirates were 10-3 going into the contest, while the Chargers were about to play just their second non-league opponent in six games.
North proved it was up to the challenge, upsetting Greensburg 50-43 in a come-from-behind effort. The Chargers trailed 8-2 early, and 12-6 after the first quarter.
However, the hosts showed they were hungry for a win as the momentum resoundingly swung back into their favor. North assembled a 24-8 run in the second quarter.
Senior Melissa White started the spurt early with a score off an assist by junior Kelly Schwering.

Foul trouble and missed free throws sank Greensburg (10-4), which shot just 9-for-21 from the stripe. North, though, made 23 of 31 foul shots (74 percent). North chipped away at the visitors’ lead with clutch free throws as senior Jill Hammersmith’s pair tied the game at 16-all. Hammersmith had led all scorers with 10 first-half points.
Also contributing for North during the Chargers’ 24-point second quarter was freshman Jenna Meyer, who scored all nine of her points in that period. Meyer’s pair of free throws with less than a minute left in the half put North up by 10 at 28-18. The Chargers went into the break leading 30-20.
Despite 3-pointers by Greensburg seniors Macey Menkedick and Melanie Trammell, the Pirates could not mount a lasting comeback. Leading Greensburg’s 13-0 run was senior Chas Lecher with eight points. The visitors did take a 33-32 lead on a Laura Welage jumper late in the third quarter, but North’s defense clamped down on Greensburg’s scorers and the momentum stayed in the Chargers’ favor.
Hammersmith notched a pair of crucial steals along with five fourth-quarter points to help ice the game.
“We’re just so happy and thrilled,” said head coach Julie Record. “We could have fallen apart after that first quarter. We just couldn’t hit anything. They were able to get themselves going.”
Hammersmith and Meyer lead North (10-5) with 15 points apiece, while White added seven. Hammersmith shot 8-for-10 from the line, Meyer shot 5-for-5 and White shot 5-for-7.
“Our crowd tonight was incredible,” said Record. “The student section was amazing. It’s such a great win for us.”
Senior Chas Lecher led Greensburg with a hard-fought 22 points, including 15 in the second half. Trammell scored seven points, Macey Menkedick added three, while Tess Christian, Hannah Doerflinger, Danielle Keillor, Laura Welage and Jennifer Redelman each scored two. Morgan Menkedick added one.

Greensburg committed 21 turnovers, while North committed 15. North also won the rebounding battle, 31-28. Leading North in rebounding was Meyer with 10, for a double-double. Amelia Daeger grabbed six boards, and Heather Hayden tallied five.
“Congratulations to North Decatur. They played a great game,” said Greensburg head coach Mike Miller. “We got away from what’s been working for us. You can’t play that way. We have some soul searching to do. We are in the wrong state of mind right now.”
Greensburg returns home to play Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference rival South Dearborn Thursday, while North will hit the road to battle Mid-Hoosier Conference rival Edinburgh.
