Greensburg was the host for a 4-team freshman tourney Saturday featuring teams from Shelbyville, Batesville, Franklin County and Greensburg.

Batesville and Franklin County started the day off with Batesville winning in two games.

Greensburg faced off against Shelbyville in the second match. The Bears were victorious in two games.

"The ladies pretty well stuck with them throughout the first game pushing the score to 25-22, but just couldn't find an answer to their attack in the second game with a final of 25-15," noted Pirate Coach Brian Dodson.

The Lady Pirates finished the first of their matches with 5 aces, 5 kills and 1 block.

The third match of the day was the Pirates and Franklin County with Greensburg winning in two games 25-21, 25-13 to take third place in the tourney.

"The first part of the match proved to be an even contest, both teams were never more than two points apart up to 12-12 when Franklin County started a run and pushed the score to 16-12 -- forcing the Pirates to call a time out. The score was 21-17 when Tasha Heaton stepped to the line and served six straight with two aces and made the score 23-21 drawing a Franklin County time out to try and ice her. After the time out, Heaton returned to the line served out the last two points adding another ace to her total.

In the second game the Pirates came out hitting. Casey Nelson led off the first run serving eight straight with five aces, make the score 10-2. Franklin County never had more than a 3-point run the entire game.

Heaton finished the match going 14-for-14 from the line with three aces. Nelson went 10-for-11 with six aces and two kills. Erica Schwering had five kills with Michaela Buell and Brittany Jones with one kill each.

"I am pleased with the performance of these young ladies so far this season They have accomplished a great deal, and have improved immensely from the start of the season. They have the heart and desire to win and the team spirit it takes to accomplish their goals. They all have bright futures ahead of them," noted Pirate head coach, Randy Obermeyer. "And even though the Pirates weren't able to keep the trophy for themselves, they are still number one in my book."

Batesville took Shelbyville in three games for the championship.
