Pirates Sweep Knights

The Greensburg volleyball team traveled to South Dearborn, the Pirates opponent in the sectional next week, and returned with a sweep of the Knights.

The Pirate freshman team got off to a shaky start, but pulled off the win in three over South Dearborn, 19-25, 25-9, 15-13.

The win in Game 1 gave the Knights their first game win over the Pirates in five games played. Strong serving of Tasha Heaton with 14 of the 25 points and five aces led the Pirates to victory in Game 2.

Game 3 was nip and tuck all the way to the end when Heaton came to the line to give the Pirates a 14-13 lead. The next serve from the Knights was won by the Pirates attack to secure the match.

“I was a little disappointed by the way we played the first game after winning against the Knights four games before, but it just goes to show you can’t underestimate anyone you play,” noted freshman coach Brian Dodson.

Heaton finished 23-for-25 from the line with six aces, three kills and one block. Erica Schwering had seven kills and one block with 8-for-8 from the line. Brittany Jones had three kills and one block and served 7-for-8 from the line. Michaella Buell finished with two kills and was 6-for-6 from the line with an ace.

The reserve Pirates won in two games by the scores of 25-19, 25-24.

The Pirates found themselves down a few points towards the end of the second game, but rallied back to win by one point.

In varsity action, the Pirates won in three 25-19, 25-12, 25-23.

“I’m happy with the win, but I would have liked to see us really dominate the Knights. We can play so much better than we did tonight and will have to next Thursday as we will face off with the Knights in the first match of the sectional. We seemed to play down with the level of our opponent and must learn not to let that affect our attitude on the court,” noted Pirate coach Randy Obermeyer.

Next up for the Pirates is another EIAC match up today with the Batesville Bulldogs at home. The Bulldogs can grab a share of the conference title with a win over the Pirates. The Pirates then host Brown County on Thursday before entering sectional action next week with the opening game against South Dearborn at Franklin County.
