Greensburg’s volleyball team was eliminated from sectional play in the semifinal
by eventual champion Batesville in four games 25-11, 18-25, 25-16, 25-18.
Nerves were the difference in the first game according to Greensburg head coach
Randy Obermeyer. Batesville played with aggressiveness while nerves kept the
Pirates from attacking the ball.
As nerves settled in Game 2, the Pirates took a 17-9 lead with aggressive
serving and kills from all ends of the court.
“We started playing the game as we have in the past few matches. We ran quick
plays that caught them off guard,” noted Obermeyer.
The Bulldogs rallied back and found a way to find the domination from the first
game and continued it throughout the next two games.
“The Bulldogs are a very solid team with a lot of heart and proved it later in
the day as they beat Connersville in the championship match,” added Obermeyer.
Leading the Pirates in passing from the serve was Ashley Leitgabel with 17 and
April Hershauer with 16. April Hershauer also led in digs with 16 while Ciara
Hershauer ended with 15. Holly Kohrman dished out 16 assists as setter. April
and Ciara Hershauer tied in kills with 10 each.
“I am saddened at the fact that the season is now over. We have improved so much
and I hate to see it end. I am extremely proud and pleased with the young ladies
I have been so blessed with for my first season at Greensburg. I couldn’t have
asked for a better group of athletes,” noted Obermeyer. “With their hard work
and dedication in the future, Greensburg too will be standing center court with
the sectional trophy in hand.”
Batesville defeated Con-nersville in five games to claim the sectional crown.
The Bulldogs now face No. 2 New Castle in the regional at Hamilton Heights on
Saturday. On the other side of the bracket has the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the
state — Brebeuf Jesuit and Roncalli.
