Greensburg's reserve volleyball team traveled to Lawrenceburg on Saturday for the EIAC tournament and returned with second place honors in the six-team field.

In the first match of the morning, the Pirates took on the South Dearborn Knights and finished the match in two games by the score of 25-20, 25-19.

"The ladies worked very well as a team to pull out the victory," noted Pirates coach Randy Obermeyer.

The second match of the tournament was against the Batesville Bulldogs, a team the Pirates defeated earlier in the week.

Batesville took the opening game 25-14, but the Pirates rallied to take Game 2, 25-22 and force a decisive Game 3.

In the third game, strong serving by the Bulldogs found the Pirates down 13-9, then sided out with Tawna Chauncy coming to the serving line. Chauncy fired four straight aces to tie the game at 13-13. An ace by the Bulldogs gave Batesville the lead at 14-13.

After a Greensburg time-out, the Pirates received another serve by the Bulldogs. This time a perfect pass ensued with a great set following and was finished off with a kill by Mollye Leas to tie the game at 14-14. With the rules this season of a 15-point cap on Game 3, a missed serve by the Pirates would win the game for the Bulldogs, but April Faulconer was determined not to miss. She served it in and the Bulldogs made a hitting error to secure the win for the Pirates and a chance to play for the championship.

Coach Andrea Wynn stated, "she was very proud of how well the team battled back to win against the Bulldogs. They knew it was going to be hard to beat them twice, but they all put their game faces on and brought their best game to the court. It was a great match to watch on both sides of the court."

In the championship match, the Pirates found themselves playing East Central, a rematch from last Thursday. The Pirates jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first game of the the match. The Pirates worked hard and were picking up everything East Central threw at them and finished the game with the win at 25-22. The Trojans rallied in the following two games to win over the Pirates 25-9 and 15-8.

"I am very proud of the girls for how they played all three matches today. They worked very well as a team and have all come a long way this season as far as skills, teamwork, communication and aggressiveness. Overall they are all winners in my heart," noted Coach Wynn.

Leas led the team in passing from the serve with 20 and only two errors, while Chauncy came in second with 18 and only three errors. Melissa Fry led in digs with 12 and one error, while Amber Leitgabel ended with 13. Leas attacked for 20 kills for the day. The ace leader was Faulconer with eight.

The reserve record is up to 11-10 on the season.
