Batesville Sweeps Pirates as Conference Play Is Winding Down

Aaron Kirchoff, Sports Editor, Greensburg Daily News

Greensburg hosted Batesville in EIAC volleyball. The Bulldogs left town with a sweep of the Pirates.

In varsity action, it looked as though there would be a repeat of the previous match-up with the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs dominated the first game, but the Pirates started to grab control in Games 2 and 3.

In Game 2, the Pirates hit the floor to dig everything the Bulldogs tossed at them. After 14 ties, it was 27-27 on a tip by Ciara Hershauer for the Pirates. Two consecutive Bull-dog kills finished off the Pirates’ hopes.

Game 3 saw a 5-1 Pirate lead, again followed by a great catch-up by the Bulldogs. Solid performances by both teams found another tie at 15. From there, things went badly for the Pirates and great for the Bulldogs as Batesville kept them at 15 for seven serves en route to the victory.

“I am very pleased with the way these girls fought hard tonight to find the Bulldogs weaknesses and capitalize on them in the second and third games,” noted coach Randy Obermeyer.

“The improvements these girls have made this season were shown in Games 2 and 3 of tonight’s contest. Every one of the girls can feel proud of what they have accomplished thus far this season.”

“It’s a whole new ballgame next week at Sectional, as all teams start a clean slate and anyone can be beaten in the IHSAA tournament series.

“It’s just a matter of who wants it the most and who is willing to go the distance. We definitely have the ability to beat any team in our sectional and we are looking forward to the opportunity to prove it.”

Digging leader Ciara Hershauer end-ed the night with 18 and no errors. Holly Kohrman led the team in assists with eight. Ciara Hershauer also led the team in aces with three and in kills with five. Carolyn Moore also ended with five kills and two solo blocks.

The loss drops the Pirates to 10-20 on the season, 3-7 in the EIAC.

Reserve Match

The reserve Pirates lost in three games 12-25, 25-14, 15-4.

The Pirates dominated the first game, moving the ball and communicating well. But the Bulldogs grabbed the momentum in Game 2 and they never let it back in the Pirates hands. Strong serving by the Bulldogs made it difficult for the Pirates to set up an offense.

The digging leader was Tawna Chauncy with 14 and two errors. April Faulconer led the team in setting with 10 assists. Mollye Leas ended the match with five kills.

The loss drops the junior varsity record to 12-11 on the season and finished the EIAC at 5-5.

Freshman Match

Batesville won the freshman contest in two games, 25-14, 25-18.

Batesville took an early lead in Game 1, building the lead to 24-10 before Greens-burg rallied to score 14. But a side out ended it.

Game 2 started with the Bulldogs serving an eight-point run before the Pirates could get the side out and make a run of their own to make the score 8-6. A side out by Batesville and another small run by Greensburg gave the Pirates their only lead of the match 10-8. The Pirates tied the game twice, at 13 and 17. But the Bulldogs pulled away for the win.

“We tried something different and it was working well enough, but we still had trouble receiving their serves,” noted coach Brian Dodson. “Batesville has a sound team and our only hope in beating them was to make fewer mistakes than they did.”

Michaella Buell lead the Pirates with 12-for-12 from the line with two aces. Rachel McClintic, Kim Kamman and Tasha Heaton all had one kill and Erica Schwering had two kills. Heaton had the lone block for the Pirates.
