Volleyball
East Central at Home
August 16, 2005 - Greensburg Daily News - Aaron Kirchoff
Greensburg and East Central opened the volleyball season on Monday on the Pirates’ home floor. Although each game was very competitive, it was the Trojans that came out on top in the varsity match in three games 25-23, 25-18, 25-22.
“Passing, which I thought would be the skeleton in the closet for us this season, turned out to be the best part of our game,” noted Greensburg coach Randy Obermeyer. “I guess the threat of not letting them do the fun, quick, offensive stuff until their passing met my standards played a bigger role of their improvement than I though it would. The next objective will be to speed of the offense and to get rid of the passiveness and the playing to keep from loosing, instead of truly playing to win.”
Game 1 was close from the start to the finish with the Trojans holding on for the two-point win.
In Game 2, a fast start by East Central in their first serve rotation, put Greensburg in a push to find an offensive answer. The offensive push began, but a little to late to get the lead as the Trojans went up 2-0.
An even faster start by Greensburg in the third game put the Pirates in front by eight points until about midway through the game.
“We made a few too many mistakes at the net that cost us big,” noted Obermeyer.
Ciara Hershauer had a big night at the net with 13 kills. Holly Kohrman guided the offense with 15 kill assists. Hershauer and Ashley Leitgabel share the team lead in digs with 13 each.
The junior varsity couldn’t keep their first match jitters from getting the best of them as they fell in two games 25-9, 25-19.
Passing by the Pirates improved in Game 2 according to Coach Obermeyer which led to kills and a loss by only six points.
The freshmen were defeated in two games at the scores of 25-18, 26-24.
Next for the Pirates is Franklin County on Thursday on the road and then the Southwestern (Shelby) Invitational on Saturday.
