Greensburg's volleyball teams traveled to EIAC foe, Franklin County on Thursday. It was a hard-fought five games, the Wildcats outlasted the Pirates 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 16-14.
To see just how close the match was, in total points, Franklin County outscored Greensburg 108-105 -- just three points after five games.
"According to the fifth game's score, we fell short of the victory, but we did not lose. They are winners in every sense of the word, " noted Pirate coach Randy Obermeyer. "If I had to give one word that describes these young ladies that I have been so blessed with this season, it would be the word, ''heart.'' The excitement that they gave their coaches, their parents and each other last night can only be expressed as awesome."
A well-rounded offense from the Pirates put away 41 kills -- eight came by sophomore, April Hershauer, who had to fill in the middle hitter spot, normally played by her sister, Ciara, who was absent from the game because of a sprained ankle. Other kill leaders include Kelly Nicholson, Carolyn Moore and Erica Oakley all of which had seven kills.
The assist leader was Holly Kohrman with 14 while Oakley ended with 12.
Nicholson led the night with 16 digs, while "Libero" Ashley Leitgabel dug for 15, then Oakley with 12. Brittany Redelman toed the service line for six serving aces, followed by Kohrman with five.
The tournament that was scheduled for this weekend at Southwestern (Shelby) was rescheduled to September 24 because of renovations being incomplete at their facility.
Next up for the Pirates (0-2) will be another and third straight conference foe, Lawrenceburg on Tuesday at home with the reserve match beginning at 5:00 p.m.
