Tigers hand Pirates another EIAC loss

Aaron Kirchoff - Greensburg Daily News

The Tigers of Lawrenceburg handed the Pirates their third straight conference loss in volleyball action on Tuesday. The host Pirates were defeated in three games 25-19, 25-16, 25-22.

“The fast paced middle offense that Lawrenceburg was able to put together was too much for us to handle. We just let them tip us apart tonight. Lawrenceburg tallied up 13 kills by tips alone, and we were just unable to cover it,” noted Pirates coach Randy Obermeyer. “Once we pulled the defense in or over to help stop the tip game, Lawrenceburg was able to attack to the lines and corners. Lawrenceburg also put away 10 more kills on the faster side of the ball.”

Coach Obermeyer also pointed to the Pirates passing game against the Tigers. A tough night receiving serve led to eight Tiger aces and the Pirates were unable to get into an offensive rhythm.

“It’s early in the season, and change takes time. Breaking old habits is the hardest thing these girls have been faced with thus far. They know and understand what they are supposed to do in every situation, but their body wants to do something else because of the old habits. They are right in the middle of a reprogramming stage, and will get through it just fine,” added Obermeyer.

Ciara Hershauer ended the night with seven kills, followed by Erica Oakley with five kills. Hershauer also finished with 14 digs while “Libero” Ashley Leitgabel had 12.

April Hershauer aced two serves. Holly Kohrman handed out 11 assists while Oakley ended with 10 assists.

The junior varsity Pirates lost in three games 18-25, 25-22, 15-8.

“They showed more aggressiveness tonight than they have so far this season. They too are in the middle of a reprogramming mode, and are getting through it step by step,” noted Obermeyer.

Jessica Morris finished with eight kills. Melissa Fry and Kylie Hanmer both served three aces. Hanmer also ended the night with 11 digs. April Faulconer dished out 11 assists.

The freshman Pirates won in two games.

Next up for the Pirates is Connersville on Thursday. The match is set for 5 p.m. on the Pirates’ home floor.
