Milan Edges Greensburg

Greensburg’s volleyball teams hosted the Indians of Milan on Tuesday with the Pirate reserves picking up a win.

The reserve Pirates won in two games by identical scores of 25-19, 25-19. The win is the Pirates’ eighth straight to improve to 10-8 on the season.

“They have definitely proved they know how to win ball games. Each and every player has contributed to the last eight wins, and I am very pleased with the way the handle themselves on the court, even when things start to go sour. They always keep their composure when things get tough, and work through it to find the big ‘W’,” noted Pirate coach Randy Obermeyer.

April Faulconer led the team in assists with 10, while Tawna Chauncy and Jessica Morris tied in kills with five each. Leas also led the team in serving with 91 percent on 11 serves with one ace.

In varsity action, the Indians proved to the Pirates that it’s not over until it’s over as the Indians rallied from two games down to post the victory.

Greensburg defeated Milan the first two games by the scores of 25-21, 25-16.

“Everything went great for us in the first two games. They played better in these two games than I’ve seen them play in the past few weeks. Very good passing led to great sets and awesome attacks and Milan seemed surprised and overwhelmed by our offense. I am extremely proud of what we accomplished in the first two games, and am determined to see more of it before the season ends,” noted Obermeyer.

Down 14-9 in the third game, Milan began to play more aggressively and grabbed some momentum. Three serve receive errors in a row by the Pirates gave the Indians their first lead of the night at 16-15. A few more kills by Milan and more reception errors by Greensburg led to a 25-19 Milan win.

Game 4 saw Greensburg with an 8-3 lead. Three straight kills by Milan pushed the score to 8-6 and then two kills by each team ran the score to 10-8. An eight serve run by Milan gave the Indians the lead at 19-12 and two reception errors by Greensburg gave Milan the 25-15 win.

At 4-4 in Game 5, Milan drew a yellow card from the referee and I felt we could use that to our advantage. An ace gave Greensburg a 5-4 lead. A Greensburg kill put the Pirates up 6-5, but then a service error tied the game at 6-6. Four reception errors and a setting mistake along with some great Milan kills, kept the Pirates at six for the rest of the game as the Indians closed out the match.

Ashley Leitgabel led the team in passing from the serve with 19 and Kelly Nicholson finished with 14. Ciara Hershauer led the team in digs with 14. Sophomore middle hitter April Hershauer led the team with 16 kills.

Erica Oakley had a solid night in setting as she assisted for 15. Leading from the service line was Ciara Hershauer with 21 serves and five aces.

“If these girls continue to play like they did tonight, there are sure to be some exciting matches to watch this season yet. They have the ability to beat any team that steps foot on the other side of the court. I believe it, their parents believe it, and now they may be starting to believe it,” noted Obermeyer.
