Pirate spikers sweep EIAC foe Knights

The Greensburg volleyball squads played at home tonight against EIAC foe South Dearborn and won at all three levels.

The freshman Pirates knocked off the Knights in two games by the scores of 25-9, 25-20.

After dominating the first game, Pirate coach Brian Dodson tried a different line-up for the second game. Dodson wanted to put players in different playing positions for them to gain experience and for them to use it as a learning tool. Problems arose in defense, which was expected, but great serving by the Pirates bailed them out.

Erica Schwering led the team in the attack with four kills and she also added three aces while serving 11-for11 and had two blocks.

The win brings the freshman squad up to 5-4 on the season and 4-2 in the EIAC.

The junior varsity Pirates also dominated their match as they beat the Knights in two games 25-15, 25-10.

"This JV team has really pulled themselves together for the past few matches and is getting better each time they step onto the court. Aggressiveness has been the key to the past two wins and will continue to bring wins in the future," noted Pirate head coach Randy Obermeyer.

Leading the team in digs was Amber Leitgabel with six and no errors. In passing from serve receive, Laura Grimes led with four with no errors. Mollye Leas led the team in aces with seven and in kills with five.

The junior varsity Pirate's record improves to 3-8 on the season and 2-4 in the EIAC.

The varsity team also put the Knights away in the minimum number of games 25-19, 25-22, 25-15.

"Even though it wasn't the prettiest win of the season, nevertheless it was a win. The non-hitting Knights found a way to stay in every game by just tipping the ball at us. Very few attacks by South Dearborn forced us to play without a block. With the ball coming back at us in such a slow speed, the girls had too much time to think, versus just making plays," noted Obermeyer. "We really had trouble with the slow paced game the Knights seemed to play. Our front line moved back to the 10 foot line and prepared for the dump, which allowed us to speed up our offense, since the hitters were already off the net and only had to start their approach."

Leading the night in digs was Holly Kohrman at 14 with no errors.

"Holly made some spectacular digs on the ball. Plays that most girls just dream of making once in a great while. Holly is one of those girls that play with everything she has. She never quits on the ball and is full of heart and desire," noted Obermeyer.

Kohrman also led the team in assists at 19. Passing from the serve, Ciara Hershauer led with 11 and no errors. Kelly Nicholson finished second with 10. Ciara Hershauer also led the team in kills with 10 while April Hershauer followed her with nine.

The win pushes the varsity Pirates' record to 4-13 on the season and 2-4 in the EIAC. Greensburg returns to action today hosting North Decatur at 5 p.m. in the Field House.
