GREENSBURG - It has become traditional for the Greensburg Community High School SADD Club to observe Red Ribbon Week with a series of events that encourage other young people to lead lives that are free from substance abuse. This year was no exception.
The group conducted a poster decorating contest for elementary school students. All of the entries had a drug-free theme, and the best poster was selected at each grade level. Several of the posters were displayed at the Decatur County Memorial hospital.
Each morning, substance-free high school students representing academics, music, clubs or sports joined the GES news team. During the broadcast they announced to the audience why they had chosen not to use alcohol, drugs or tobacco.
The club members capped off the week with a Red Ribbon Rally at Greensburg Elementary and one at St. Mary’s. Songs, cheers and other group activities created endless enthusiasm and promoted abstinence from substance abuse. As part of the program, Ally Tressler spoke to the group about her personal choice to lead a clean, healthy life. Ally is a GCHS athlete and part of IHSAA’s Role Model Program. She gave one of her Role Model posters to each classroom and each student received a trading card announcing.
"The only thing I light up is the scoreboard," Tressler said to the students.
The program is sponsored by the Decatur County Tobacco Awareness Coalition, GCHS and the Decatur County REMC.
A highlight of Red Ribbon Week at the Greensburg Junior High occurred during lunch. Students gave blender demonstrations during which they mixed shakes from the chemicals and other products used to manufacture cigarettes.
The Community Action Coalition will sponsor a movie at Wolf Theaters for GCHS students who signed to be drug free. The participating students were given Drug Free Bracelets, and any who wear the bracelets to Wolf Theater on Saturday night will be admitted free to the movie. In addition, they will receive free popcorn and drinks. Red Ribbon Week recognition will conclude for the high school students at the end of the movie when names will be drawn for gift certificates at Aeropostle and American Eagle.
