Northeastern Tour
(Continued from page 3)| Cyrus Hamilton (6.4 miles) Thomas Hamilton Continue on NE 80 to Kingston Church and Cemetery.
17. The Presbyterian Church stands across from the community cemetery where many prominent and familiar names of the area are visible. Just ahead on the left, behind the trees is the old school that was built in 1914. It served as a 2-room, eight grade facility that was very unique as it had a basement and a furnace. The school was last used in 1941. (8.1 miles) Continue on NE 80 to 400 N. Turn right on 400 N (also NE 80) view largest magnolia tree.
18. Continuing on NE 80 brings you around a sharp turn to the right and immediately on the southside of the roadway, you can see the tallest magnolia (cucumber) tree in Indiana. This species is rare in the north. It stands 83 feet high, 4 1/2 feet in diameter and has a crown spread of 66 feet. The tree has large leaves and purplish white blooms. It is believed the tree was brought north by the Donnell Family, to remind them of their prior home. The home site is unique in that roadways have changed over time, the back of the house is what is visible from the road. This home also was involved in the underground railroad, and was known as the Samuel and J.C. Donnell home.

19. This home, known as the Orlando Hamilton home was
involved in the railroad. (8.3 miles) Follow NE 80 (turns left) to Mount Carmel Cemetery. (10.2 miles)
20. Mr. Carmel Cemetery contains several examples of white bronze monuments, made in four sections and bolted together. A good example of this is the female figure with an anchor at her side. The anchor was to symbolize being anchored in heaven during the final voyage of death. Notice that some headstone materials weather better than others (check the sandstone). Continue on NE 80 to 700 E. (11.0 miles) Left on 700 E to Clarksburg. (12.4 miles)
21. Cement Road the section of 700 E that is concrete is known as the "Cement Road" to many county natives. It streched from Greensburg to Clarksburg and featured a flat, straight section that was a favorite of "drag racing" youths. See if you can spot the start and finish points. Turn around and return on 700 E to 400 N. (15.1 miles) Left on 400 N to Lake Santee. (17.2 miles)
